Several years ago we had a horrendous ice storm in the area. People had little warning that it would be so bad and conditions worsened so quickly that most people were doing their best to just get home safely, much less go to the store and stock up on provisions.
When my secretary and her family lost their electricity for more than 2 days, i drove over in my 4 wheel drive and picked her up with her husband, their 3 kids and their 2 dogs. That was a rough ride back to my house – which never did lose the electricity, thank God. We inflated 5 air mattresses and laid them out in the dining room like a mini-bunkhouse. The family slept there for 5 days until the electricity was back on in their own house.
It’s a good thing I had stocked up on cheap air mattress for camping trips – they got put to good use. That ice storm was quite an adventure and I hope we don’t ever go through that again. It’s too bad that I don’t still have the same secretary now, she had to move closer to her aging parents down to South Carolina and the kids have seemed to adjust to the move all right. We keep in touch, two of the boys are on Facebook and we chat from time to time which makes me feel good that they remember me and that I’ll be able to see what they are up to and how they turn out.
